The philtrum is located between the nose and the upper lip.
Traditional physiognomy values a deep, wide, and long philtrum as a symbol of longevity and good fortune. Modern aesthetics, however, emphasizes the golden ratio of the face and dislikes an excessively long philtrum. This has led to the development of the concept of an ideal philtrum proportion, which can be calculated using the golden ratio of the face. The face is divided into three equal parts from top to bottom: upper face: from the hairline to the center of the eyebrows; middle face: from the center of the eyebrows to the bridge of the nose (lower edge of the nose); lower face: from the bridge of the nose (lower edge of the nose) to the chin. When the ratio of the upper, middle, and lower face is 1:1:1, it conforms to the golden ratio of the face.
The lower face extends from the bridge of the nose (lower edge of the nose) to the chin. When the lips are the center, the area from the lower edge of the nose to the upper lip is the upper part, and the area from the lower lip to the lower edge of the chin is the lower part. The ideal ratio between the upper and lower parts is "1:2". That is to say, the appropriate length of the philtrum is about 1/2 of the length of the chin. If it is greater than 1/2, the philtrum appears too long. If it is less than 1/2 of the length of the chin, the philtrum is considered too short.
