[Doctor's Answers] Common Breast Augmentation Questions: Should I massage my breasts after the procedure? Will massaging the smooth surface hurt? How long is the surgical incision?
Dr. Yang Shan-Chun, a specialist in comprehensive breast augmentation surgery at Arsty Clinic, will answer frequently asked questions about breast augmentation during consultations today. The first question is:
Q. Is massage necessary after breast augmentation?
Actually, it mainly depends on the material of the breast implant you choose. There are so-called smooth and rough surfaces. Smooth surfaces require massage, while rough surfaces do not. How to choose will be related to your preferences and lifestyle. Therefore, the doctor will have a detailed discussion with you during the pre-operative consultation and give you further appropriate advice.
Q.Will it hurt when massaging a smooth surface?
Some people say that after breast augmentation, it feels like being run over by a truck, which is a bit of an exaggeration. Because we now use endoscopic breast augmentation, we avoid important blood vessels and nerves, so the postoperative pain and recovery are not as difficult as you might imagine. Smooth implants do require massage. About a week after the surgery, once the patient has rested enough, you can start massaging, pushing in four directions (up, down, left, and right) to maintain the space in the breast. After getting used to it, you can progress to eight directions or a full circle. This process mainly involves a sore feeling in the muscles.
The reason why textured surfaces do not need massage: In the clinic, I am often asked why textured surfaces need massage. Some people say that textured surfaces need massage, but in fact, the design of textured surfaces does not require massage. The rough surface design of textured surfaces is to conform to your tissue. Since it is to conform, you do not want to press it often. The necessary pressing is to increase its elasticity and softness, not to knead it like smooth dough. So in principle, textured surfaces do not need massage.
Q.How long is the surgical incision? Will the scar be noticeable?
It depends on the implant material you choose. If it's a smooth or soft droplet implant, the required incision will be smaller. If it's a regular soft droplet or mermaid droplet implant, the incision will be larger, but the difference is not significant. The incision is about 3-4 cm. Sometimes we use the crease under the armpit or the shadow under the breast to make it less noticeable over time. Scar care is also very important at times.
