I got rid of my angular face after jaw reduction surgery, and I'm becoming more and more beautiful.

Why would I want to have my jawbone shaved?

My prominent cheekbones and jawline make my face look bigger and wider in photos!

Since I was little, I've always felt that my face looks bigger and wider than others when I take photos. It's square and not very attractive, especially since my cheeks are quite thin, making my cheekbones and jawline more prominent. My face shape isn't round enough, and I look unlucky and miserable, which has affected my self-confidence.

So I've always wanted to consult about jaw reduction surgery to improve my cheekbones and jawbone area. I hope to make my chin line smoother, my face less angular, and my cheekbones less prominent. I want a softer face shape that looks more pleasing.

I found online that Arsty Clinic's minimally invasive bone reduction surgery is their specialty.

This time, I mustered up the courage to visit many clinics and doctors. Initially, I felt that Korean jaw reduction techniques were more advanced. However, after researching jaw reduction online, I discovered that Taiwan's professionalism and techniques are already quite mature. I felt more at ease having the procedure done in my own country, so I immediately decided to choose a Taiwanese doctor. Seeing the past cases done by Dr. Jing at Arsty Clinic, which closely resembled my ideal face shape—soft, natural, and perfectly suited to each individual's features—I immediately booked an appointment at the clinic for a consultation about the surgery!

Jaw reduction surgery is best suited for improving round or square faces. It can also effectively improve other common facial defects such as prominent cheekbones, wide cheekbones, facial asymmetry, protruding chin (banana face, moon face), receding chin, facial asymmetry, and uneven face, helping you regain your confidence!

Dr. Wei-Cheng Ching, a specialist in bone reduction surgery

Doctor JingDuring the consultation, I found the doctor to be very considerate and attentive. He listened carefully to my needs before offering advice. For example, this time I mentioned that in addition to Zygoma reduction, the focus was on the jawline; I wanted a smooth and defined line from my ears to my chin. The doctor then designed a suitable facial contour for me based on my needs and condition, and explained the golden ratio of the face to me.

"We often hear about the golden ratio of the face dividing it into three parts: the face below the nostrils should account for 1/3 of the face, or the face below the lower lip should be twice the length of the philtrum. However, such proportions are only general principles. It is still necessary to make an overall assessment and plan based on different face shapes and facial features. For example, a narrow and long face may not be suitable for such proportions, as it can make the face look even longer."

Throughout the consultation, you can clearly understand the surgical plan designed by the doctor, how to deal with each stage before, during and after the surgery, which makes me feel at ease and less nervous. I am also more confident about the postoperative results and do not feel uneasy.

I think this is related to Dr. Jing's professionalism and extensive experience. Later, the consultant told me that Dr. Jing was previously a senior attending physician in craniofacial Orthognathic Surgery at Taipei, Linkou, and Chang Gung Memorial Hospitals. She had received complete craniofacial surgery training and was very professional and experienced in bone reduction. In addition, due to her background, she had extensive research on facial bones and fascia tissues. Her professionalism, skills, and aesthetic sense were all trustworthy, which made me feel very comfortable entrusting myself to Dr. Jing.

After all, jaw reduction surgery is no minor procedure, and it's not something to be taken lightly. Choosing a professional and suitable clinic and doctor is absolutely the first and foremost requirement.

Postoperative recovery was much easier than I had imagined.

One week post-surgery

This is when the swelling is at its peak, and you should eat liquid foods. It will get better in the second week, and a month after the surgery, the chin contour will be visible. Some bruising and swelling will disappear naturally, and you can eat softer foods.

Two months post-surgery

My daily life is mostly back to normal now. I just need to take good care of the wound. I brush my teeth and rinse my mouth after every meal to keep my mouth clean. The swelling has gone down a lot, and I love how it looks now. It perfectly matches the lines and contours I envisioned. My cheekbones have receded, and my jawline is smooth and soft. I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks after the swelling goes down even further!

Three months post-surgery

Aside from some remaining swelling, it looks very natural now. Some friends can't even tell I had jaw reduction surgery; they just think my facial expressions seem softer. I'm very happy with my current facial contours!

Six months post-surgery

My face has almost fully recovered, and my sleep and diet are back to normal. Only my jaw feels slightly numb. Looking closely in the mirror, I can see that my cheekbones have receded, and my jawline is much smoother and more defined. Now I don't need to find the perfect angle for selfies anymore!

I'm getting more and more beautiful now!

I used to have to constantly find the right angles, especially since my cheekbones and jawline had so many sharp angles, which I thought were unattractive and my face shape often bothered me.

Plus, I've gained a little weight recently, and my face is a bit fuller. I think I look better, and my friends and I both think my facial features are softer. I don't look so miserable anymore!

I'm so grateful to Dr. Jing! Her medical skills are superb, and she's very kind. The post-operative appearance was also discussed and aligned with my pre-operative expectations. I really like Dr. Jing and Arsty Clinic! 🥰

Common problems in osteotomy
Q: How long is the recovery period after jaw reduction surgery? Will my face be very swollen?

A: Post-operative recovery is highly dependent on individual constitution. Because facial blood vessels and tissues need time to heal after surgery, the face will generally be more relaxed 2-3 days after the procedure.Swelling usually subsides significantly within two weeks after surgery. It is recommended to apply ice packs initially and then apply heat packs later to accelerate healing and reduce swelling.

Q: Will jaw reduction surgery on a square face affect or remove the masseter muscle?

A: Simple bone reduction surgery does not affect the masticatory muscles, but masticatory muscle reduction surgery can be performed at the same time depending on the situation. After the surgery, normal chewing function will not be affected, but the lower face width caused by masticatory muscle hypertrophy can be reduced.

Q: Can a protruding chin be corrected by bone shaving alone?

A: A simple protruding or overly long chin can be improved with Genioplasty. However, if it is accompanied by a protruding lower jaw or malocclusion (third-degree occlusion), Orthognathic Surgery is required to improve the root cause of the problem.

Q: Is bone reduction surgery the only way to correct a face that is too large?

A: A wide face isn't always caused by bone structure. Hypertrophic masseter muscles, facial fat accumulation, and sagging skin are all possible causes. Therefore, besides bone reduction surgery, other treatments such as Botox injections to improve hypertrophic masseter muscles, facial liposuction, removal of intraoral fat, and facelifts can all help improve a wide lower face, depending on the specific situation.

Q: Will bone reduction surgery be very painful?

A:

Many people worry about the pain of surgery. Arsty Clinic understands your concerns. We use sedation anesthesia during the procedure, and a specialist anesthesiologist will be present throughout to adjust your condition as needed. Therefore, you don't need to worry too much during the surgery. Post-operatively, we will also implement appropriate pain relief measures. Additionally, we can arrange far-infrared irradiation and restorative IV drips to help shorten the recovery period. Everyone's pain tolerance is different, but with our extensive experience, we will help you recover quickly during the initial weakened recovery period and welcome your new self with a relaxed mind. If you have any special circumstances before surgery, we recommend discussing them with your doctor during the consultation so that we can adjust your post-operative care accordingly.

Q: Are there any side effects or risks of failure after jaw reduction surgery?

A:bone reduction surgeryThis procedure has a long history in medicine. Occasionally, temporary numbness, difficulty opening the mouth, and a tingling or numb sensation in the facial nerves may occur post-surgery. The most important factors are the surgeon's extensive experience and professional skills, and comprehensive aftercare. Patients should consult with their doctor before surgery, follow post-operative instructions, and take medication and return for follow-up appointments as prescribed to reduce the need for secondary bone reduction surgery.Failed bone reduction surgeryRegarding any issues, our hospital will arrange the aforementioned measures to give patients greater peace of mind.bone reduction surgeryprocess.

Q: What is a complex bone-shaving surgery?

A: Arsty Clinic's minimally invasive and scarless bone reduction surgery can perform one or more composite facial plastic surgeries depending on individual circumstances. It can cut or remove bone at appropriate locations, or make three-dimensional displacements of the facial bones to make the overall curves smoother.

Q: Postoperative care instructions

facial swelling

Generally, swelling is most pronounced on the 2nd-3rd day after surgery, and will significantly subside within a week. Following the instructions of your nurses, apply ice to your face using ice packs or ice towels. Apply ice to your cheeks or sides of your nose for 15 minutes. Avoid keeping your head too low; when resting in bed, it is recommended to elevate your head with 2-3 pillows to reduce swelling. If the swelling persists or significantly increases after surgery, please contact the clinic staff for a prompt evaluation and treatment.

Sore throat

Because a breathing tube is used during the operation, a sore throat may occur after the operation. You can try cold drinks or ice cream to relieve the throat discomfort. This condition will disappear after 2 or 3 days.

diet

After surgery, please avoid foods that are hot or spicy, as these can cause oral discomfort and may increase swelling or bleeding. Cool foods can relieve discomfort in the mouth and throat. The amount of food you eat after facial contouring can be determined based on your individual recovery progress.

Postoperative poor mobility or physical weakness

Postoperative recovery depends on individual physical strength and condition. Generally speaking, resuming eating and physical activity as soon as possible after surgery helps to enter a positive cycle of postoperative recovery (eating → physical activity → appetite → eating). If appetite is poor, at least try to drink plenty of water, or try cold liquid foods or high-calorie ice cream first.

Postoperative fever

Because general anesthesia can cause sputum to accumulate in a small portion of the alveoli in the lungs, a small number of people may experience a mild fever 3 days after surgery. This is not a wound infection and can usually be improved by drinking more water and moving around more. It is not recommended to stay in bed for a long time during the day, because the lying position does not allow the lungs to expand fully and expel the sputum.

Postoperative bleeding and wound hematoma

Currently, facial bone surgeries are all performed subperiosteally, so the chance of postoperative bleeding is very low. However, bleeding may occur at the bone incision site. Because there are wounds inside the sinuses, there may be a small amount of nosebleed for 3 to 5 days post-surgery; the wounds will heal on their own. Applying ice and moderate pressure to the wound after surgery can reduce the chance of bleeding. If bleeding persists, please contact clinic staff for prompt evaluation and treatment. If hemoglobin levels are too low, a blood transfusion may be necessary.

Wound cleaning and care

Since the surgical wounds are all inside the mouth, they are considered contaminated wounds. Maintaining good oral hygiene, proper wound care, a regular lifestyle, and avoiding unhealthy habits can all reduce the chance of infection. It is strongly recommended to avoid smoking, staying up late, eating regularly, and keeping the mouth clean to minimize the risk of infection. Rinse your mouth immediately after eating with mouthwash and brush your teeth 2-3 times a day. Post-operative inflammation of the wound may occur, requiring oral antibiotics. Most cases will improve on their own, but a small percentage may require injections of antibiotics or drainage of the abscess.

Wound healing time

The oral cavity has good metabolism, and sutures usually fall out naturally within two to three weeks due to hydrolysis, without the need for removal. In a few cases, due to poor absorption, the sutures may not fall out naturally, requiring removal.

Bone healing time

The osteotomy site is firmly fixed using mini bone plates and screws made of titanium alloy, so you don't need to worry about it affecting bone stability when speaking or sleeping on your side after surgery. Generally, the osteotomy site will begin to heal within six weeks after surgery, but complete healing may take up to six months. Therefore, it is recommended that you avoid any sports that may involve impact within three months after surgery.

Abrasions of the lips and the skin around the mouth

Because the procedure is performed inside the mouth, the insertion and removal of instruments may cause superficial damage to the surrounding skin. These abrasions usually heal within one to two weeks and typically do not leave scars.

Facial movements

Avoid actions that strain or cause facial congestion, such as tilting your head forward, sneezing forcefully (blowing your nose), or straining to urinate, as these actions may increase the chance of facial swelling or bleeding. Avoid using a straw for one week after surgery to prevent food from entering the wound due to negative pressure in the mouth.
