When the eye opens, the levator palpebrae superioris muscle shortens, and the force is transmitted through the levator palpebrae superioris fascia to the upper tarsal plate, pulling the upper eyelid upward. The sutures penetrate the surface tissue and deep structure to form an adhesion.
